About Us

The Ben Lippen Class of 1987 consisted of 60+ graduates who attended Ben Lippen School in Asheville, North Carolina, a Christian boarding school with students from all around the world. The school moved to Columbia, South Carolina shortly after our class graduated, but our hearts didn't move with it. As a class, we held our 5-year reunion in Columbia in an attempt to relate to the new location, but we decided to return to Asheville for all future reunions -- the mountains and the surroundings are what we remember!

The Class of 1987 was always incredibly cohesive, motivated and dedicated...and it continues to be! Our reunions have a consistently high rate of attendance, and we are about to celebrate our 20-year reunion in October 2007. Here is a peak at the schedules and rules we lived with during our time at Ben Lippen:

Students are to be out of bed at the rising bell (girls 6:15; guys 6:30) except those who are ill.
Each morning the dormitory rooms will be inspected for cleanliness and neatness. A more thorough inspection including closets and drawers will be made on Thursday.
Fellows and girls are not to be in the other dorm unless accompanied by a faculty member. Parents visiting from off-campus may visit the dorm, but the floor needs to be warned if there are men in the girl's dorm or women in the boy's dorm.
Do not use the linen for any purpose other than that for which it was intended. (For example, don't use sheets or towels to wipe grease off your car!)
Turn off lights and appliances when leaving the room. Fines are charged when lights are left on, or the heat is on and windows left open, or when leaving the room with the thermostat set above 60°
Don't play "practical jokes" without clearing it with a faculty member and arranging for clean up and costs. (Toilet paper costs 75 cents a roll)
It is usually wise not to be a borrower or a lender. Borrowing and lending can hurt friendships. We ask that you not lend or borrow over $5.00 without your counselor's permission, and we will make no collection efforts for any loans not authorized by your counselor. Any sale of property over $5.00 must have your counselor's permission.
For dining you will be assigned to sit at a particular table for each three-week period. Rotation of assignments allows you to meet everyone in the student body sometime during the year.
Before dining please quiet quickly when the bell has rung and have a prayerful attitude through the "Amen". It is then the boy's responsibility to seat the girl standing to this right. If the girl to your left has no one to seat her, be alert to help. At the end of the meal the boy should stand to help the girl with her chair. (Girls, wait for him!)
Very few foods other than bread, cookies, or fried chicken may be eaten with fingers; follow the example of the head of your table.
A slice of bread should be halved, at least, before it is eaten. Butter one-half at a time and eat that before buttering the other. Lay your knife across you plate before biting your bread. (If you consume a half slice of bread in less than three bites, your bites are too big.) "Dunking" bread or cookies is out of order in the dining room.
Don't fill your spoon completely. Spoons should be dipped away from you, and then pause to wipe your spoon against the side of your bowl. (This may save your favorite tie or dress.) If your soup is too warm, stir for cooling.
With fork or spoon, bring the food up to your mouth rather than down to your food. Elbows should not be on the table. The hand at rest (i.e. not feeding you) should be in your lap.
Do not whisper or talk privately to someone in the presence of others Make an effort to enter into conversation with those around the table.
One of the main purposes of music is to glorify God.
We also believe music has a strong impact on our emotional and mental progresses.
We believe music is a gift of God, and that it can and should be used and encouraged for sharing true and good things with others and for personal fulfillment.
The school (and most of the students) is quite serious in not wanting or allowing certain practices. These include: obscene language, profanity, possessing pornographic or "dirty" materials, and the use or possession of alcoholic beverages, tobacco (including the "smokeless" variety) and any sort of controlled substance. Nor are Ben Lippen students to participate in gambling activities or to attend dances or movies in town.
There is to be no physical contact between fellows and girls, including playful hitting, poking, and grabbing.
While we have no "distance" formula, fellows and girls should not be touching while sitting together and must maintain normal postures and positions while sitting or standing.
At varsity ball games all couples and mixed groups must be in the bleachers except for walking directly to and from the field. They are expected to return directly to campus after the game.
During daylight social times, fellows and girls may participate in active games such as Frisbee throwing on the main parking area.
Serious involvement between a couple is discouraged. While it is normal that students will develop some especially close friendships, we encourage you to also develop a wide circle of friends and not to be isolated from the interests of others.
On school buses fellows and girls may sit together during daylight hours as long as only two people are occupying a seat. They may not sit together after dark. This includes the Friday night Burger King bus.
Fellows and girls are not to be together in off-campus homes without faculty supervision.
Penalty for unexcused failure to do domestic: 1st time: grade of 10 and responsible to get it don; 2nd time: grade of 10 and one hour of work crew. Every subsequent time: previous action plus a discipline note will be given.
Domestic checkers will be seniors who will train, supervise and check and provide needed equipment. All students need to remain at their domestic until it has been checked by the Senior checker.
Friday night study hours are held 7:20-8:30 p.m. (no break). At times Friday night activities replace the study time. Many Friday evenings a "Burgerbus" goes down the hill just after study time. There is a small charge (15 cents) for this transportation.
You ought to have finished all preparations (undressing, teeth brushing, writing Dad for money, etc.) and be in bed just after turning off the lights.
Dress appropriately for church. Fellows must wear ties and either suit coats or sports coats.
Sit in the front two-thirds of the building for church services.
Consider carefully your responsibility to give back to the Lord a part of your income.
The dorms are kept particularly quiet from 2:15-3 p.m. on Sunday, when no one is to enter or leave the buildings. In the dorms, students must remain in a room from 2:5-3. The quiet rule is relaxed a bit after 3 p.m., but there should be no loud noises, or use of the showers, or use of audio equipment without earphones until after 4 p.m.
Students may not be reading the bulletin board or loitering around campus when they should be in study hall, music practice, et. A note for reading the bulletin board during an excused trip to the rest rooms is a real possibility.
Permission to study with another student must be secured beforehand in writing from your teacher and given to the monitor.
Honor roll students are free to leave the room (but may not visit rooms of those not on honor roll) and may use audio equipment (quietly) if alone in the room or if your roommate is also on honor roll, or with earphones if roommate is not.
If on the study hall list you must spend the time on class assignments, and may not use the time to write letters, read newspapers, or magazines, or for activities not directly related to your studies.
In study hall it is best to have a written OK for the book or magazine from your teacher if the supervisor or OD is likely to think it is a pleasure reading and have you put it away for "real work". They won't usually check if you are reading Hamlet, but probably will for Nancy Drew books or Hot Rod Magazine. The burden of proof is on you.
There is no eating, drinking, or gum chewing in study hall, and the hall should be left neat and clean.
Study Hall- Excuses will not be given to go to rest rooms (use them between classes) unless it is an absolute emergency.
No student is excused from the physical education program even for medical reasons. A program will be adapted to his/her needs.
It is assumed that if road conditions prevent a student from getting to school that student would also be prevented from going out for skiing or shopping.
The Chalet was built in 1981 to replace many functions of the Inn, which was destroyed by fire December 12, 1980. The Inn was once the main Asheville post office, but was dismantled and rebuilt on the "Mountain of Trust" in 1932.
The Gym was a self help project begun in 1947 and opened in 1949 with a 40-27 victory over Asheville School!
Guys may enter the gym only through the basement locker room doors. Girls may enter by the upper side door.
Students who run on the cross country course will cross country course will cross campus boundaries, but running is not a socializing occasion and guys and girls may not run together except as part of an organized athletic department program.
Appearance, based primarily on daily room inspection grades. One privilege for grade of "1". (Boys "tapped" for long hair automatically have this grade lowered.) Boarding students only.
When standing before the mirror in preparation for the day, one should see himself/herself through the eyes of others whom he/she would not entice or offend.
You and your partner (usually roommate) may together have 25 pounds of laundry done each week.
Hitchhiking – a written OK from your parents is needed to hitchhike, and you must be accompanied by at least one other fellow.
Boys' Hair – Hair must not be so long in the back that it lays down on the shirt or collar.
White Glove Inspections are tough, thorough inspections given 2-3 times a year to the whole dorm. These are also given if your room grades fall below certain levels.
